Great job last night! A great start to the season, but we have plenty of room to grow. I have uploaded the judge's comments to the Competitions page under Ensembles, Marching Band. Try to listen to as much as you can. We'll be talking about what the judges said at rehearsal. Please remember to bring your music as we will be working on specific sections.
A couple of notes on tomorrow night's marching band awards:
This is a pot luck dessert night. Everyone other than Seniors who can bring something would be greatly appreciated. Drinks and paper goods will be provided by the Music Sponsors.
There was a small oversight and we do not have pictures for the school yearbook yet. We need the band a color guard members to arrive at 6pm with their uniforms. It will take about an hour to change take the pictures and change back. The awards night will begin at 7pm.
This is a "transitional" year for our awards. Last year I sat down with some students and discussed some changes to how and when we awarded letters so that we more closely aligned with other groups in the school. Letters are now being awarded after the second season of participation.
Official Thanksgiving schedule is posted above.
Seniors please review the official events. You should report by 8am for breakfast and Senior activities.
The call time for all other members is 8:30. We will be in the bleachers by 9:30. Breakfast will be served.
Call time for the football game on Friday 11/10 will be 5:30. We will leave the school by around 6. This will be a pep only event. No uniforms. No pregame. We will bring only what we need to play in the stands.
It is going to be cold tonight. Please dress appropriately. Once again, we are not wearing our uniforms so please layer up and be warm.
The following post focuses on the performance aspect only:
Posted below please find a rough schedule for the State Finals day on Saturday 11/4. Please arrive that day with hair and make-up done. Please remember that no one should be wearing any jewelry and that band members can wear only minimal make-up. No food will be provided at this event.

Note to students:
Of course this is all a little tongue-in-cheek. More than anything else I want you to treat this like any other competition. Make the performance your first priority. Your parents are doing a wonderful job making sure that this event will come together. I want you to have your states experience. We'll talk about how you can help in the later part of the day if you can, but until those group III awards are called you are like any other band.
By now you know that the State Championships @ Rowan have been postponed. It has a been a long day of phone calls and negotiations with USBands and administration, but I can now pass along this information:
The USBands NJ Sate Championships for groups IA, IIA, & IIIA are currently scheduled for Saturday, November 4th at MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL SOUTH!
This of course is both a tremendous opportunity and a tremendous undertaking. There are still hurdles that will need to be overcome, but I am confident that our band family, our school community, and our Middletown community are ready to show the Marching Band world that we are ready for the big stage. Not only with our students' performance on the field, but with our ability to tackle whatever comes our way as a program.
The Screaming Eagles need your help now more than ever. This is an "all hands on deck" level event.
We will be having an emergency Music Sponsors/parent meeting this Saturday at 11:15 at the end of the Saturday rehearsal to lay out the plan.
We can do this, and in the process change the face of marching band in Middletown for years to come.
Posted below please find a rough schedule for the State Finals day on Sunday 10/29. Please arrive that day with hair and make-up done. Please remember that no one should be wearing any jewelry and that band members can wear only minimal make-up. We will be providing bagels for breakfast/the ride before we leave and will then have sandwiches for after the performance.

I came to the realization this morning that this year marks our marching band's 10th competitive season. The MHSS Eagle Marching Band had its' first full competitive season in 2008 with a Harry Potter field show. Three years later in 2011 the group would adopt the Screaming Eagles moniker as it competed with a field show based on the music from the Cirque du Soleil program KA. The band has improved greatly since that time, going from distant last place finishers to a group that is in the competitive mix. It has even taken home some true first place finishes from local shows.
Congratulations band members on being part of a growing tradition, and let's remember that in big ways and small we all leave our mark on what the band is and can be. Live in the moment, be positive, and give your all towards making the Screaming Eagles the best they can be.
In celebration of our anniversary here's a list looking back at the field shows from the past 10 years.
2008 - Harry Potter
2009 - Illuminations
2010 - The Music of Journey
2011 - KA
2012 - Jersey Boys
2013 - The Nightmare Before Christmas
2014 - It's About Time
2015 - In Your Dreams
2016 - Fade to Black
2017 - Come Fly With Us

I am sorry for the uncertainty in the rehearsal schedule. This is not the norm. I still do not have confirmation of a rehearsal site or when that potential site would be available to us. With the information that we would not have a field for today I polled the students on Saturday and made the decision to keep our normal 6:30 - 8:30 pm rehearsal schedule for tonight. Going forward the plan is to move to 3:30 with the hope that we will have someplace to practice. When the front field becomes available we will resume a normal schedule, but that might not happen until after our competitive season is done.
The results from this Saturday show that we are still in it, but we have a long way to go and a lot of catching up to do. This is not the time to sit back and relax. We were so close to second place. We need reps. We need to build stamina. We need to build confidence. We need to be on a field.
With the time that we have our music should be spotless. Hopefully you have listened to the judge's comments and recognized that these are things that you have heard before. We can do better musically. We can do better visually. We have to sell our show!
